Smile, Valentine’s Day is Here!
What if we told you there was a simple and painless way to boost your confidence–and your attractiveness to your partner or someone of interest? And what if we told you, on top of that, that it was free? It sounds too good to be true, but it’s a fact: smiling not only makes you feel better, it makes you appear more desirable to other people. Don’t believe us? Read on.
Simply put, you feel good when you have a smile on your face, and there’s science to back it up. Countless researchers have found, through various studies and methods over the years, that engaging the muscles used to smile releases the brain chemicals that trigger happiness. This means that even if you’re not actually feeling happy, the simple act of forcing a smile to engage those muscles will yield the same results. Guess that’s what they meant when they said “laughter is the best medicine!”
What’s more, smiling can actually reduce stress. A 2012 study published in Psychological Science found that participants who were asked to smile while completing a tricky task–even if they were faking the smile–had lower heart rates and lower reported stress levels than those who were not directed to smile.
So let’s get to the juicy part–that whole ‘being more attractive’ thing. In 2011, scientists at the Face Research Laboratory in Scotland asked male and female subjects to rate the attractiveness of various people shown to them in photographs. By and large, both men and women reported feeling more attracted to images of people who were making eye contact and smiling than those who were not smiling or were avoiding looking at the camera. See? A confidence gaze and a bright smile go a long way!
So what does that mean this Valentine’s Day? It’s time to put the science to the test. The next time you walk out on the street or into an office, give a stranger a warm, genuine grin. We bet you’ll feel good, and you just might strike up a conversation with a new friend! If you have a date this February 14, put your best foot–and face–forward with a smile.
Everyone should feel confident and proud of their smile, but we know it’s not always that simple. Sometimes an imperfection with your teeth makes you feel self-conscious, or your pearly whites aren’t really all that, well, white. You deserve a smile you love.
